The Boston Bruins have yet to find a new head coach, but recent reports imply that the process is moving forward.
The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun reported Thursday that the Bruins will conduct final interviews with applicants next week. He also says they've spoken with a variety of prospects, including Marco Sturm, Jay Woodcroft, Mitch Love, Luke Richardson, Joe Sacco, and Jay Leach.
When the Bruins fired Jim Montgomery last November, Joe Sacco became interim head coach. Since the regular season finished, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney has stated several times that both Sacco and assistant coach Jay Leach will be considered for the head coaching position.
The Boston Herald's Steve Conroy received a noteworthy update from Sweeney, who stated that he is not waiting to interview any head coach candidates for teams still in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. "Unless something changes, that would eliminate one coach who has been a leader in the rumor mill clubhouse, Dallas assistant Misha Donskov," Conroy wrote in a letter.
Jay Woodcroft is one intriguing name that LeBrun noted.
After the Edmonton Oilers had a 3-9-1 start to the 2023–24 season, he was sacked early in the season. He had been the team's head coach from 2021–22. During his brief stint, the Oilers made it to both the second round and the Western Conference Final. The 48-year-old Woodcroft is regarded as a talented young coach, and his prior experience as a head coach in a hockey-mad market is advantageous.
There are other teams still looking for a head coach besides the Bruins. A new bench boss is also required by the Seattle Kraken and Pittsburgh Penguins.
